The greenhouse can be placed in the garden, porch, window sill, or roof provided the area receives direct sunlight for at least several hours a day. The sun's location changes during the year, and it is very important to make sure that the greenhouse receives enough direct sunlight, especially in wintertime. A greenhouse located in a warm open area, radiated by rays of sunlight for most hours of the day, will necessitate some extra shading during the hot summer days.
A suitable potting mix or potting soil is an important part of the plant's environment. It enables the plant to absorb fertilizers and water through the roots and ensures we have a healthy plant, as the root is the part that nourishes the plant, helping the leaves bud and the flowers blossom. There is awide variety of potting mix or potting soil on the market, which usually contain a combination of the following substances: soil, coconut, perlite, vermiculite, styrofoam, Hydroton, etc. The potting mix should be mixed with a large amount of organic compost, In a ratio of 1 to 40. We recommend covering the soil with mulch to prevent rapid evaporation of water, keep weeds from growing around your plants, and maintain plant health.
Germinating seeds is the process in which sprouts burst forth from the seeds and begin to grow. The seed already contains an "embryo" of the plant inside its shell, and usually, also the basic nourishment it needs for sprouting. The sprouting of seeds depends on internal and external conditions, including temperature, water and oxygen, and sometimes light as well. Seeds can be bought in a garden center, gardening stores, or various internet websites, which enables the grower to grow various species of plants, as required. Many people prefer to germinate seeds to demonstrate the germination process to their children or pupils. It is also possible to sprout seeds to get edible sprouts and enjoy their high nutritional value, which includes high values of proteins, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, and nutritional fibers.
A Homegrown-pro greenhouse allows you to control the level of warmth and humidity around the plant. It is designed to give an optimal environment during cold winter days, hot summer days, and everything in-between. When the temperatures go down and the air gets dry, the top layer of the cover should be closed on all sides. During the day, the rays of sunlight will warm up the air locked inside the greenhouse, raising the temperature and increasing water evaporation, so that the humidity rises as well, creating a perfect environment for the plants to grow. When the temperature outside rises above 20° Celsius / 68° Fahrenheit during the day, all windows of the greenhouse should be opened, and the outer cover rolled up, to let air penetrate and cool the air inside the greenhouse. During hot summer months, we recommend fully opening the front cover as well, allowing the air to circulate freely, due to the need to lower the temperature as much as possible. A Homegrown greenhouse allows you to remove the outer cover fully to enjoy the beauty of blossoms in summer. If the greenhouse is situated in a place where the sun shines strong all day, you must use shade netting to provide extra shading.
The best way to handle pests is to try to prevent them in the first place. Almost every grower comes at one time or another across pests that covet his plants. As a home grower, you must be alert ready for them. Greenhouse plants may be infected with viruses that move in the air from other nearby plants, from the hands of the grower who touched another infected plant, or from the nursery they had been purchased from. In such a situation, you can simply uproot the infected plant and replace it with another, to prevent the virus from spreading to other plants. In a greenhouse, you can grow plants without having to use pesticides, because you control the insect population. You can bring in ladybirds to eat aphids, and Bombus bees to pollinate the fruit and vegetable flowers. You should stay alert throughout the growing season and check regularly for the presence of pests on the plants. If you find some kind of pest, you should treat it immediately. For more information, look for a guide to efficient organic pest control. Several companies sell commercial pesticides, usually available in all gardening centers and stores. Viruses attack plants of the same type they develop in, which means that you should grow several types of different plants in your greenhouse, and avoid monoculture (the cultivation of a single crop in a given area) so that the virus does not infect all plants in your greenhouse. It is of course advisable to keep your hands clean and wear disposable gloves when handling the plants.
Spices and Herbs can be planted in a greenhouse throughout the year. There is no need to trellis the plants. Strawberries and legumes – special growing shelves can be added to the greenhouse for growing Strawberries and legumes, or else they can be planted in standing plant pots. Preferably, strawberries should be planted in November, so you can enjoy them already in January or February.
In nature, pollination is usually done by bees or butterflies. For growers in a Homegrown greenhouse, which can be fully sealed, we recommend shaking the flowers lightly every 2-3 days, which causes the pollen to spill over into the stigma at the top of the pistil and fructify the flower.
