What is a Greenhouse?

Greenhouse

A greenhouse is a structure that makes it possible to grow plants under optimal controlled conditions. It allows you to control the temperature, humidity, light, and pests, to provide ideal growing conditions for the plant. The greenhouse structure mostly occupies a relatively small area, which means you can get a large number of crops for the area you use. It makes it possible to grow various seasonal plants the whole year around, not only in certain seasons, or to grow certain types of plants in an area where the local climate will not let them grow outdoors at all.

The Greenhouse Effect

The greenhouse is made of transparent walls and produces a hot micro-climate for the plants without constant heating costs. Heating the interior space inside the greenhouse to a higher temperature compared to its surroundings is based on absorbing the rays of sunlight entering it, and not allowing the infrared rays and the hot air to escape. The greenhouse also insulates the plants inside it from winds, hail, snow, and sandstorms, allowing you to grow your plants from the sprouting state when the plant is still weak until it matures. Moreover, the soil itself warms up and helps the plant to achieve maximal development.

Light and Radiation

The greenhouse cover refracts the light rays coming from the sun and filters the ultra-violet radiation which burns the plants. The cover sheet diffuses the light rays equally over the entire greenhouse. This diffusion is highly important in increasing the effectiveness of the photosynthesis process by raising the level of exposure of the various plant parts to visible light.

Types of plants to grow inside a Greenhouse

The greenhouse allows you to grow various types of plants, from flowers to vegetables and herbs. 1. Edible plants are the most common use of greenhouses. You can grow fruit and vegetables in a greenhouse during seasons and in geographical areas where that fruit or vegetable does not grow naturally. 2. Flowers – In the past ten years or so, there has been an increasing trend of growing flowers in greenhouses all around the world. The greenhouse helps grow flowers even during cold periods when flowers do not blossom. 3. Growing and sprouting decorative and greenhouse plants while providing each plant with unique growing conditions. The plants can be transferred and planted in the garden or plant pots after the plants get strong enough. 4. Growing and sprouting of trees, from the seed stage to a size that allows planting outside.

Humidity

By growing plants in a greenhouse, you save water, because some of the irrigation water condenses on the greenhouse walls and streams back down the walls to the ground. The phenomenon of water condensation raises the level of humidity in the air, which creates a comfortable growing environment for the plant, especially in areas where the air is dry. The level of humidity can mostly be regulated using mechanical airing systems (such as vents)or electric (such as electric ventilators).

Viruses and Pests

The hermetically closed greenhouse serves as a protective shield, keeping pests and insects outside while keeping helpful insects, such as pollinating insects or pest exterminators, inside. Treating pests is easier inside the greenhouse, as it allows for fast local treatment of the problem, preventing it from developing into a more extensive problem in the future.
